The following is the [XGNews]: European operators called for the cancellation of icloud privacy relay service, saying it violated the EU’s “digital sovereignty” recommended by xgapn.com.

Some EU mobile operators want to ban Apple’s icloud private relay privacy relay service because it is suspected of violating the EU’s “digital sovereignty”, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Icloud private relay is a function released by IOS 15 system. It encrypts data so that apple and third parties can’t see the browsing content of users in Safari browser. After icloud private rely is enabled, the user’s Internet request will be sent through two independent Internet relays. The first relay is operated by apple. The second relay station is operated by a third-party company, which means that no one, including apple, can see the website visited by users.

Icloud private relay has now provided beta versions on IOS 15, ipados 15 and MacOS Monterey

In August 2021, less than two months after the release of icloud private relay, operators such as Vodafone, Telefonica, orange and T-Mobile sent a joint letter to the European Commission expressing their concerns about this service. According to the report:

Mobile operators have fallen into a power struggle with apple. They urged regulators to ban the iPhone manufacturer’s encryption technology on the grounds that it would undermine “digital sovereignty”.

Operators said that icloud private relay “aims to enhance users’ privacy when connecting and browsing the Internet by encrypting and redirecting traffic”, but it also cuts off “the access of networks and servers to important network data and metadata, including those operators responsible for connection”

Outside the EU, some network operators in the UK are also worried. In his letter, talktalk claimed that icloud private relay would “make it more difficult to block dangerous content”. In a statement to the daily telegraph, the company said it was “assessing how to respond to this change and how to fulfil our commitment to protect the safety of our customers.”

Icloud private relay has now provided beta versions on IOS 15, ipados 15 and MacOS Monterey. It is unclear when Apple plans to end the test. According to the daily telegraph, the European Commission has not responded to letters from several operators.
